Upcoming Quizzes and Tests

Wednesday, March 3rd - Grammar Quiz on Interrogative Sentences

Thursday, March 4th - Math Quiz - Unit 5 Ch. 3: Area and Perimeter of Composite Figures

ELA:

It has been yet another wonderful week with the Fourth Grade students in English and Language Arts. Scholars are officially halfway through The Princess and the Goblin! We have been so impressed with the scholar’s deep understanding of the book’s themes. Scholars have learned that courage is greater than any fear, that people are more important than things, and that true old age means strength, wisdom, courage, and beauty. [We make sure to remind them of that last one often. :)] In Writing, students have been practicing how to connect complete thoughts properly and how to write a strong paragraph. Students have also been working on analyzing interrogative sentences in Grammar. They have shown a wonderful understanding of the parts of speech and how words work together to convey meaning. This coming week, we look forward to seeing just how much they know on their upcoming grammar quiz (3/4/21). We cannot wait to see your scholars develop this week!

Math:

Scholars worked hard this week in math reviewing concepts in area and perimeter before displaying their knowledge with a quiz. We finished the week with a fun interactive activity using notecards to form composite figures. Next week, we will continue applying and exploring skills with area and perimeter with composite figures, including paths (a frame or border created by two rectangles). Scholars will wrap up with a quiz at the end of the week before we leave for break!

History:

We have wrapped up another great week of American history. We have been diving into conversations about European exploration of the Americas, starting with understanding the reasons to explore before learning about three different explorers. Fourth graders were, then, able to create flyers for explorations. Next week, we will continue to discuss exploration, as we discuss Texas missions and the religious implications of European exploration. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to my email! Have a fantastic weekend!

Science:

We have concluded another week of exploring light and sound waves. After our snow week, it was time for a review week, just to ensure our scholars did not lose too much over their break. It was amazing to see that students’ excitement for waves had not faltered, and students felt ready and eager to take a short quiz, to cap off the week. Next week, we will move into deeper conversations on invisible waves.

Weekly Fourth Grade Update 2.12.21.

Weekly Update

(2.8 - 2.12.)

Friendship Day

Scholars had excellent crafts and gifts brought in to show friendship to their classmates today! It was great to see the items scholars had worked on to share with their classes and teachers. You may have noticed your scholar coming home with lots of extra goodies today.

Monday - No School

As a reminder, there will be no school on Monday. Because of this day off, Friday next week will be a regular full school day. Scholars may work on poems or corrections this weekend, but it is also meant to be an R&R weekend for scholars to relax. Stay warm and have fun!

Planners and Homework

Teachers do their best to check agendas and mark missing assignments for scholars. Please look for teacher initials and notes in planners to ensure your scholar is staying responsible for their daily work.

Upcoming Assessments:

Area and Perimeter Quiz - Wednesday, February 17th

ELA:

For language arts, we have continued to enjoy the beautiful writing of George MacDonald in Princess and the Goblin. Scholars have made some dramatic and exciting predictions of what will come next! Make sure to ask them what a “clue” is. :) Scholars will continue to practice working on contractions, interrogative sentences, and subject pronouns. The students will also continue writing with the skill of “RPQ-ing.” This week they had the chance to share about their best friend in the sweetest of essays. We are excited to read more of their wonderful work!

Math:

In math this week, scholars spent the first half of the week focusing on area and took a quiz before adding in perimeter. They were great creative problem solvers using their knowledge of quadrilaterals to help solve word problems and finding missing information with area and perimeter problems. Test your scholar on their formulas and ask them to quickly explain the difference between area and perimeter! Next week we will keep practicing area and perimeter before introducing composite figures. Please encourage your scholar to bring math notebooks home to complete homework as it is primarily graded for completion and practice.

History:

American history is off to a great start with lessons on geography and native groups! Today, students were able to put on their historian hats and analyze primary sources, by looking at artifacts from the Comanche tribe and decide what they were used for. I am looking forward to our discussions, next week, where we will begin talking about European exploration and Texas missions. As a reminder, homework is sent home nearly every lesson and students are expected to complete it for a grade. See you next week and stay warm!

Science:

We have been continuing our discussion of waves, and we are finally learning about light waves. Students were completely enthralled with how fast light moves and they are excited to see how waves react to color. As a reminder, homework is being sent home for science, and students are expected to complete it for a grade. See you all next week and stay warm!

Weekly Fourth Grade Update 2.5.21.

Quarter 3!

(2.1 - 2.5)

Good evening fourth grade! Our apologies for the missed blog updates and the late update tonight. Thank you for your patience and support as we have transitioned classes and scholars have moved to Great Hearts Online.

We are so proud of how our scholars continue to show perseverance and grit through these times. Last week, we were busy with benchmark testing and are continuing to settle into new classes and schedules in Quarter 3. Some quick announcements below.

Friendship Day

Next Friday, scholars will celebrate the virtue of friendship together. You are welcome to work on a craft for your scholar to bring and share with classmates or individually wrapped snacks for the class to enjoy. Please feel free to reach out to room parents or your homeroom teacher to help organize your plans for this. Infographic below.

ELA:

We are well underway on our adventures with Princess Irene in Princess and the Goblin by George MacDonald. Scholars have had practice making predictions, learning new words, and identifying figurative language as they read. We have had rich conversations about courage, friendship, and curiosity. As we become better readers, the scholars have also been improving their writing and grammar. We are practicing RPQ-ing, repeating part of the question in our answer. Scholars have also continued to analyze sentences, with a focus on interrogative sentences and contractions. Please remind your scholar to practice Paul Revere’s Ride each night! It’s the perfect tool to ensure a thorough 20 second hand wash. :) We look forward to becoming better Language Artists!

Math:

Scholars worked hard this week reviewing what we have learned about quadrilaterals and triangles (ask your scholar to explain what an isosceles triangle is!). We also celebrated our acquired math knowledge with a cumulative unit assessment at the end of this week. Please continue to encourage your scholar to practice math facts at home through flash cards, skip counting, or other games. Although simple, committing times tables to memory greatly enables math fluency in problem solving and will help your scholar develop into a confident mathematician!

History:

What a week! We have wrapped up our discussion on African history, and I know I will miss all of the conversations we have had about trade, money, Islam, and leadership. We took our test and scholars should expect their grade next week. Next week, we will also begin our unit on American history, with a discussion on Indigenous groups and Texas geography. I know our scholars are excited to learn more about their history.

Science:

It has been such an amazing week of learning about sound waves. We started the week with a general lesson on waves and we ended the week with students composing their own sound waves! Next week, we will do a quick review of sound waves, before moving onto light waves.
