ELA:

This past week in ELA, we finished The Wonderful Wizard of Oz! We are finishing our literary journey with an in-class writing project, reflecting on the big ideas of the book. We will also celebrate our last classic with a Literary Celebration on Tuesday, 5/25. Scholars will also be reciting Paul Revere's Ride this week, so make sure your student practices. We are so blown away by the way the scholars have grown in their language skills.

Math:

Scholars have done excellent work this week in math showcasing their knowledge of factors, prime numbers, and multiples. They have gotten to use their knowledge in games like prime climb and did great work on their quiz. We finished out the week with more review of fractions. Scholars will take one last quiz next week and end the year with a final refresher of fractions, multiplication and division. We are so proud of the hard work scholars have put into this year on their journey to becoming outstanding mathematicians!

History:

Hello historians! This week in history, scholars wrapped up their studies on the American Revolution and have begun work on their Texas history projects. Each scholar has a different prominent Texan to research and write about in order to teach their peers. We will finish out next week working on and presenting their work and findings.

Science:

Hey scientists! Scholars have been doing awesome work finishing up this unit on renewable resources and clean energy. We will wrap up our final week reviewing what we have covered and practicing good investigative skills.

Math:

A big round of applause for our scholars completing their STAAR testing this week! They have been hard at work reviewing math concepts and building skills all this year and did a great job persevering through their testing. We finished off the week with practice with factors and multiples and will continue reviewing into next week using fun cuisenaire rod manipulatives to practice arrays and fractions!

ELA:

This past week in ELA, scholars continued their adventure through Oz. We took a brief break in our journey to show our knowledge on the STAAR Reading test. Then, we got right back to it! Scholars have shown such joy with this familiar story. They encountered fighting trees, lands where everything is made of fine China, and terrifying giant spiders. Next week, we will wrap up Dorothy’s story as we finish the book. We will reflect on some of the major themes and ideas from the novel with a writing activity. Scholars will also continue to practice analyzing sentences as well as memorizing Paul Revere’s Ride. We look forward to another amazing week!

History:

Hello historians! A huge congratulations to students for completing their first ever week of STAAR; we are so proud of their hard work! This week, we only had one day dedicated to history and we used that day to talk about the Declaration of Independence. We had a great time tricking students in the beginning of the lesson with a fake “break-up” letter, and then spoke about the impact of the Declaration. Next week, we are quickly wrapping up the Revolution and moving into a different revolution: The Texas Revolution. Have a great weekend.

Science:

Hello scientists! Another congrats are in order for our “STAAR” scholars for completing a week of state testing! Thank you so much for supporting students throughout the week. This week, we met for two days and focused entirely on the project. On Monday, students spent the day working on their projects, before turning them in on Friday. I loved hearing students present their projects and share what they learned about renewable energy. I will have projects graded by the beginning of the last week of school! Have a great weekend.

Weekly Update

May 3rd - May 7th

STAAR!

We have STAAR testing for reading on Tuesday and math on Wednesday. Due to testing, there will be no homework Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday night so scholars can rest and come to school refreshed. Please schedule appointments outside of these dates or after lunch if on a test day. On test days, if possible, please prepare a hearty breakfast including protein so scholars have plenty of stamina and energy for their tests. No backpacks should come to school on Tuesday and Wednesday. You will only need to send your scholar with water, their lunch, and a silent reading book. Hot lunch will still be available.

Upcoming Tests and Quizzes

STAAR Reading - Tuesday, May 11th

STAAR Math - Wednesday, May 12th

Renewable Energy Science Project - Friday, May 14th

Paul Revere’s Ride - Wednesday, May 26th

ELA:

This past week in ELA has been a wonderful adventure for our 4th graders! The students continue to get great practice in their grammar skills. We have analyzed sentences to better understand the parts of speech, and scholars apply this to their own writing. We have also been focusing on numerous reading skills and strategies to help our students become more critical independent readers. We have seen these skills come alive during our Classics time. Students are making insightful inferences about our characters, and they have fully invested themselves into Dorothy’s journey. We are so excited to continue our adventure through the Land of Oz with your scholars! **Note: There will be no spelling test this coming week due to the STAAR test.

Math:

Scholars are continuing to build up and refresh their foundational math knowledge and skills. This week, scholars practiced working with decimals, practiced unit conversions in both the customary and metric systems, as well as discerned number patterns and rules with input and output tables. We are so proud of their hard work day in and day out in math. It has been wonderful to see their confidence grow with their multiplication charts, and we will be cheering them on with testing this coming week!

History:

Hello historians! This week we have officially started our discussion on the American Revolutionary War! We started talking about the First Continental Congress, before moving onto the Battle of Lexington and Concord. We ended today talking about the Second Continental Congress and drawing pictures of George Washington. Next week, we will only have one history lesson, on the Declaration of Independence.

Science:

Hello scientists! This week, students reviewed for a quiz on renewable and nonrenewable energy sources. Afterwards, they took a short quiz on those resources. Next week, students will continue working on their projects and they will turn in their projects on Friday. Do not forget that students can turn in a poster for extra credit.

ELA:

This past week has been so abundant with excellent literature! Scholars have been continuing their journey through Oz with our beloved characters, and they have been learning great lessons along the way. Scholars have learned about the true meaning of courage, intelligence, and teamwork. Scholars have also continued to practice analyzing sentences with Object Pronouns, and they have also been working on using an outline as a writing tool. Our fourth graders have also been working hard on memorizing “Paul Revere’s Ride.” We have had to delay the due date for this poem to allow students an appropriate time to memorize it. We are aiming to present during the final week of fourth grade! We look forward to another great week ahead of us.

Math:

Scholars are continuing to work hard as we survey and review math concepts from throughout the year. This week we have been focusing on geometry concepts and terms. The fourth grade team has been enjoying getting to work with scholars in small groups as we explore lines of symmetry, angles, area and perimeter, and identifying shapes. Scholars are also continuing to improve and grow in their math facts with their 100 charts practice. Next week, we will revisit decimals and work on measurement and unit conversions.

History:

Hello, historians! This week, scholars have been learning about the events leading up to the American Revolution. We talked about the 3-year time period of calmness and then we discussed the events of the Boston Tea Party. Next week, we will discuss the beginnings of the Continental Congress and the first battles of the Revolution. I look forward to those future discussions! Have a fantastic weekend!

Science:

Hello scientists! This week students have been working on their projects and wrapping up our conversations on renewable and nonrenewable energy. It has been so rewarding to see our students’ come to understand how our planet sustains itself and how we can do our part to help our planet! Upcoming Tests and Quizzes

Reading STAAR - Tuesday, May 11th
Math STAAR - Wednesday, May 12th

ELA:

This past week in Language Arts, scholars began their journey to the Emerald CIty with Dorothy, Toto, the Tin Woodman, and the Scarecrow. The students discussed the idea of home and determined that it is far more than just a place. They also debated whether it is more important to have a brain (intelligence) or a heart (empathy). This debate is still ongoing! Scholars also practiced the writing process and using object pronouns. This coming week in ELA, we will take a pause from Spalding as students complete MAP tests and Benchmarks, so there will be no spelling test. Scholars will still be having Literature and Guided Reading each day. We will resume our normal class schedule on Monday, 4/26.

Math:

This week in math scholars displayed their knowledge of decimals up to the hundredths place. Scholars have already been making great improvements and growing in confidence practicing math facts, 2 digit multiplication, long division, and word problems with coaching from Mrs. Watts. Next week, we’re excited to see which classes will have the fattest and most improved scholars on their 100 charts and continue to develop skills with fractions and geometry.

History:

This week students have been learning about taxation and the affect it had on the English colonists, as we get closer to the American Revolution. While focusing on taxes placed on paper goods and sugar, students came to the conclusion that colonists were justified in their anger towards the British government. Next week, we will focus on two more laws and taxes passed, leading up to the War.

Science:

This week, we concluded our conversation about fossil fuels and focused on global warming while learning about coal and natural gas. Students did a fantastic job at weighing the costs and benefits of using fossil fuels and are excited to learn about renewable energy, next week. Have a great weekend!

History Quiz - 4/16

Science Project - TBD

ELA:

This past week in ELA, scholars impressed us with their efforts! Not only did they work hard on their STAAR Writing Test, but they also showed how much they learned while reading the Princess and the Goblin. We are so proud to see their growth as readers and writers! This coming week, we will officially begin our final Classic-to-Keep: The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum. Please have your scholar bring their copy on Monday. In Grammar, we will be focusing on Object Pronouns (me, us, you, him, her, it, them). Finally, in writing, scholars will continue practicing skills of expository and persuasive writing with tools such as concept maps and outlines. We can’t wait to see them continue to grow!

Math:

Scholars have continued excellent work practicing decimals up to the hundredths place. They are making great connections with how decimals and fractions relate and reflect the names of their place values. After their hard work this week with the Writing STAAR test, scholars practiced comparing decimals and have been doing a great job of lining up their place value to add and subtract decimals. Next week, they will show their knowledge of hundredths and also complete their next unit test!

History:

Hello historians! This week we focused on the events leading up to the American Revolution, specifically with the Seven Years’ War and taxation. Next week, students will learn more about the issues leading up to The Declaration of Independence, and they will write their own versions. There will be a tiny quiz next Friday as well. See you next week!

Science:

Hello scientists! This week our scholars worked hard on learning more about fossil fuels and the effect they have on our environment. They learned how fossil fuels are created and how they harm the environment using the greenhouse effect. Next week, we will look closer at fossil fuels by investigating coal and natural gases’ effect on the natural environment. Scholars should expect hearing about a project in the upcoming week.
