ELA:

This week our scholars continued their work in memorizing “The Tyger” by William Blake. They’ve also reached the half-way mark of King Arthur. As the fourth grade develops their literary scholarship, they balance it with their writing practice. This week our scholars solidified their knowledge of helping verbs and adverbs by creating their own sentences to express each part of speech. Great job, 4th Grade!

Math:

This past week, scholars pushed themselves and showed perseverance on their first Unit Test! Scholars have impressed us with their ability to problem solve and apply their knowledge. We look forward to helping scholars understand the Four Operations. We will continue to explore mental math strategies and discover how place value provides a foundation for our standard algorithms. We encourage scholars to use any strategy that works for them, but we invite them to try some of the strategies we teach. They may be difficult at first, but these exercises will improve their number sense. Please continue encouraging your scholar to practice math facts!

History:

This past week for History, we continued our studies of the Middle Ages. Scholars discovered the three main socioeconomic classes during medieval times: nobility, clergy, and peasants. This coming week we will be taking a closer look at the actual lives of some of these classes. We hope your scholars are excited to learn about lords, ladies, and knights!

Science:

For science this week, our scholars took a quiz on the five natural hazards we have been learning about and then started a brief unit on meteorology. We talked about the water cycle and considered where most of the earth’s water is and water existing in the air around us! We finished out the week with a lesson on light, shadows, and moon cycles. Next week, we’ll take a look at weather and practice analyzing weather and climate together.

Weekly Fourth Grade Update (9.18.20.)

Week Six and Returning to Campus!

(9.14 - 9.18)

Good evening! We hope everyone is doing well. Here are our announcements and updates.

Announcements:

Brick and Mortar

For all of our scholars who returned to campus, we hope you enjoyed these first couple of days back in the building!  We loved getting to see you in person and dive into our lessons together. Thank you parents as we continue to work out kinks and figure out our systems for balancing Brick and Mortar and Distance Learning.

Adjustments to Google Classroom

As part of our shift into a hybrid classroom, Google Classroom assignments will no longer be mass posted on Sunday night. Everything distance learning scholars will need for each day will show up before their school day starts, but in order to accommodate videos and lessons that will be filmed live, we will not be able to post everything on Sunday.

Changes in Zoom Times

Please review new times that your homeroom teacher has sent out for Zoom small groups. If you have not indicated a specific time that you need, your homeroom teacher will assign a group. These new small group Zooms will only take place twice per week for about 30 minutes each. Zoom links will be posted in Google Classroom.

Read on for a quick update on our class subjects!

ELA:

This week, scholars practiced using helping verbs with a fun picture activity and continued reading King Arthur. Scholars are practicing making predictions as they follow along with the story. We also started in List Q for new spelling words. We’ll continue with King Arthur and work on “The Tyger” next week!

Math:

This coming week in math, scholars will be reviewing everything they have learned so far. On Tuesday, they will take a cumulative test covering Unit 2. Following this, we will begin a deep dive into the four operations. We also encourage scholars to continue practicing their multiplication facts for 4 and 5!

History:

This week, scholars have been working hard to learn more about the Roman Empire and we have finally learned how the Roman Empire came back together. We began the week, talking about Charlemagne and how his relationship with the Pope helped to bring the Empire together to create the Holy Roman Empire! We also completed a history review, which is important because we have a quiz next week! After our quiz we will introduce the different classes in medieval history. Thank you, all, for being so gracious during our first days of Brick and Mortar school! You are amazing!

Science:

For science this week, we finished out our geology unit by talking about landslides. Scholars learned that landslides can be triggered by all sorts of things like water, gravity, or other natural hazards. We reviewed our past lessons to get ready for a quiz on Wednesday. Next week, we’ll take our quiz and then begin talking about meteorology and the phases of the moon!

Weekly 4th Grade Update (9.11.20.)

Week Five!

(9.8 - 9.11)

Happy Friday! Sorry for the delay with this post. Important announcements below.

Announcements:

MAP Testing

Testing dates have been extended so any remaining scholars can finish testing. If you have missed either the reading or math test, please contact your teacher as soon as possible for the Zoom links needed for testing. The remaining times are:

Monday, 9/14 at 8:00am and 10:00am

Tuesday, 9/15 at 8:00am

DIBELS

Contrary to the email sent from the school, not all 4th graders will need to complete DIBELS testing. Data from our MAP testing will let us know who we need additional data for that will be completed though DIBELS testing. Your homeroom teacher will contact you directly with information about what DIBELS testing is and when to sign-up if your scholar would benefit from the additional data.

Brick and Mortar

We are thrilled to have some of our scholars returning in person next week! The return date for 4th graders who have opted to return to campus is Thursday, 9/17. If you have changed your decision about continuing distance learning or returning to campus, please notify your homeroom teacher as soon as possible.

Grades and Progress Reports

You should have received or will receive a mid-quarter progress report from your homeroom teacher today. If you have any questions, please reach out to your homeroom teacher. In order to emphasize scholars’ growth and qualitative feedback, we do not have an online grading portal for parents to access. Please feel free to reach out to your teacher about student progress at any point in the quarter.

That’s it for our announcements!  Read on for a look at what we covered in our lessons this week:

____________

ELA:

This week our scholars presented their recitations of “The Violet” by Jane Taylor--we are so proud of their work! Scholars will continue to practice their oration skills when they begin to learn “The Tyger” by William Blake as their next poem. In addition to studying literature, our scholars continue their work learning Grammar & Writing. They have been introduced to the “23 Helping Verbs” and will use this knowledge to craft original sentence examples next week. Great work, scholars!

Math:

This past week in Math, scholars got to learn and practice the order of operations. This coming week we will spend a few days learning about negative numbers. Then, we will be reviewing for a Unit 1 test covering all of the material we have learned so far. Scholars will take this test on Friday (9/18). We want to encourage scholars to view this not as something to stress about, but as a way to show what they know and take pride in what they have learned. Please also encourage your scholars to continue practicing their multiplication facts! This week, we would like scholars to review 4’s and start practicing 5’s.

History:

This week for history, we have been learning about Christianity, and what it looked like at the end of the Roman Empire. This is super important, because Christianity characterizes the entire Medieval Era. I have loved hearing scholars share their thoughts on learning about religion and they are so eager for more! This week, we will be continuing our conversation on religion by learning about monks, monasteries, and nuns, and scholars will have the chance to envision a day in the life of a monk/nun. Then we will talk about Charlemagne and his relationship with the Pope, and how they brought the Empire together, to create the Holy Roman Empire.

Science:

Scholars got great practice problem solving and thinking like engineers this week imagining how they could construct an earthquake resistant building and prevent natural erosion. If your scholars are looking for something to do this weekend, they may want to try making their own model building using toothpicks and marshmallows (or other materials) and test if their building can withstand a mock earthquake. We would love to see pictures if they do! Next week, we will wrap up our unit on geology and Earth shaping processes with one last natural hazard and a review.

Weekly Fourth Grade Update (9.4.20.)

Week Four

(8.31 - 9.4)

Happy Friday Spartans! We hope you enjoy the long weekend ahead. Check out some announcements for the coming week below.

MAP

If you missed the Reading MAP Test last week, the make-up Reading MAP Test will take place on Wednesday 9/9, from 8:00-9:30am. Please join the Zoom early to get set up. The Zoom link and passcode is located in your Google Classroom.

Zooms

As a reminder, there will be no class Zooms on Tuesday, 9/8 or on our first two days of Brick and Mortar, Thursday-Friday, 9/17-9/18. Once we switch to our hybrid model, our small group timings will change. Instead of four small groups per week, your scholar will only attend two small groups each week, but the times will be extended to 30 minute periods. Be on the lookout for new times for these groups. Please remember to submit the attendance assignment every day, especially for these days when there are no Zoom calls!

Read on for an overview of what your scholars learned this week!

ELA:

This week our scholars finished their reading of Prince Caspian. In doing so, scholars accumulated new knowledge to add to their "literary toolboxes." They will continue to grow in their skills as active readers when they begin reading King Arthur by Arthur Lang next week. Click here to purchase a copy. As scholars begin their new read, they will also close out their practice in reciting "The Violet" by Jane Taylor. Scholars have accomplished so much in their new journeys as fourth-graders. The 4th Grade Team at Great Hearts Western Hills is incredibly proud of the perseverance that each scholar is putting into their studies!

Math:

In Math this week, we dove into a deeper understanding of factors and multiples. We hope scholars have been practicing their math facts throughout this week to make it even easier! This coming week, we will begin exploring the order of operations. Though “PEMDAS” can be a helpful tool to remember the order, we want to encourage students to rely on understanding rather than mnemonic devices. Scholars will have a short quiz on Friday to measure how well they learned the week’s material. Please encourage your scholar to continue practicing their math facts! This week, we will work on 4’s. NOTE: Students will have the opportunity to make corrections to all quizzes. You will notice this as an assignment on Tuesday (9/8). Scholars will receive ½ a point back per missed point on the quiz if they successfully complete the corrections.

History:

This week our scholars, students have been working hard and engaging in our discussions on the end of the Roman Empire. We have learned that the Roman empire declined in power, and scholars were able to decide if they think the Middle Ages deserved the nickname “The Dark Ages.” This upcoming week, we will begin learning about a religion that shaped most of the Medieval Era: Christianity. As we are moving into lessons surrounding religion, I thought it would be important to set some expectations. I am aware that families practice their own religion and they are important and sacred, in those families. I am, also, aware that some families choose to not practice any religion and that is, also, important in those families. As we move towards conversations involving religion, it is important to know that our scholars are acting as historians; the goal is to study history and not to prove any religion correct or incorrect. I promise to not format religion lessons in that way, so I ask that you convey that to your scholars. Your religion at home is special and I will not take away from that at all! If you have questions or concerns, please contact me (gwen.cunningham@greatheartswesternhills.org).

Science:

This week our scholars learned how movements in the Earth’s plates are responsible for earthquakes, tsunamis, and volcanoes while considering how scientists can reduce their harms and the dangers they pose. See if your scholars can tell you how a tsunami happens or what the area known as the “Ring of Fire” is! We have a special video planned for next week looking at how scientists can put their knowledge into practical applications to solve problems and answer questions!
