Weekly Fourth Grade Update 1.15.21.

End of Quarter 2

(1.11. - 1.15.)

Announcements:

Semester 2 changes:

Our upcoming second semester will bring about new, exciting changes for your scholars, and we want you all to be best prepared for them. Starting on Monday, January 5, we will begin departmentalizing, meaning your scholars will have different teachers for certain subjects. Mr. Cho, Ms. Cunningham, and Ms. Conlon will be rotating out of your scholar’s classroom for math, history/science, and literature respectively. We are looking forward to getting to know all of the fourth grade students!

Project Week

Make sure to work hard on your project during this week off! Email your child’s teacher if you have any remaining questions. We will be presenting on Friday, 1/22; we look forward to seeing your hard work!

ELA:

Our scholars can say “Carry On, Mr. Bowditch” now that they have finished reading another classic! We are excited to begin the Princess and the Goblin in Quarter 3. However, new novels are not the only new content for ELA. Our scholars will begin working in their second Well-ordered Language textbook very soon. Congratulations, 4th Grade, on your continued journey as readers and writers!

Math:

We encourage scholars to continue reviewing the skills we have learned thus far this year. We want to see them master their math facts, show their knowledge of lines, and demonstrate their understanding of fractions. After Project Week, we will continue to learn about geometry by examining and comparing the characteristics of polygons.

History:

Hello Spartan families! This week we have had a blast learning more about Medieval Africa. We started off the week learning about the kingdoms of Kush and Aksum, before we discussed the wonders of the Trans-Saharan Trade Route. When quarter 3 begins, we will be exploring the kingdoms of Ghana, Mali, and Songhai. The end of our chapter on African kingdoms will be ending shortly, and then we will dive into American history! Have a great weekend!

Science:

Happy Friday! Scholars did great work reviewing energy and then celebrating their knowledge with a brief quiz. We then had fun getting to set up an investigation to find evidence for how sound transfers energy using just a plastic cup and sticky note. Scholars did excellent work as scientists asking good questions and testing their predictions!

Weekly Fourth Grade Update (1.8.21.)

Weekly Update

(1.4 - 1.8)

Announcements:

As you know, the end of the quarter is approaching. We are so excited to welcome more scholars back to the building in Quarter 3! As a reminder, classes will be shifting around a bit as we prepare for our Distance Learners to merge with Great Hearts Online. We encourage all of our Distance Learning students to attend the Lunch Bunches and Office Hours to soak up their last week together in their current cohort!

Project Week

As a reminder, January 18-21 there will not be school. Instead, scholars will be working on their projects independently at home. Details and materials are posted in Google Classroom for Distance Learning students. If your scholar is on campus, packets were distributed before Winter Break. There are extra copies should your scholar need a new one!

______________________________________

ELA:

Our scholars continue to remain invested in the adventures of Nat in Carry On, Mr. Bowditch. They also remain diligent in memorizing “Paul Revere’s Ride” in preparation for their recitations. For grammar, our scholars are mastering their identification skills for subject pronouns. Great work, Fourth Grade!

Math:

Scholars have been working so hard to solidify their understanding of geometry. We have examined angles, perpendicular lines, and parallel lines. Distance Learners will demonstrate their mastery of this content with a quiz on Monday over parallel and perpendicular lines. We will begin to expand this topic by looking at polygons. As we transition into Quarter 3, we will also be reviewing the skills we have learned thus far to help scholars feel confident in their understanding of the material from this semester. We also encourage scholars to continue practicing their math facts in order to increase their fluency in problem solving. We look forward to seeing the scholars grow as mathematicians!

History:

This week we finished our chapter on Islam, and students finished off the chapter with a short quiz. We finished the week off with an introduction to our new chapter on Medieval African Kingdoms! Next week, we will learn about Kush and Aksum, as well as the Trans-Saharan Trade Route. Expect one video and one book lesson. Have a great weekend, Spartans!

Science:

In science this week, scholars considered how motion and energy are connected. Classes discussed why swinging a hammer helps to better accomplish one’s goal and produce change and how wind turbines generate electricity from motion. We finished out by using a ball drop and ramp experiment to measure how greater speed and motion means more energy and greater opportunity to produce change. Next week, we will take a small quiz and investigate how sound can transfer energy!
