Weekly Fourth Grade Update 2.5.21.

Quarter 3!

(2.1 - 2.5)

Good evening fourth grade! Our apologies for the missed blog updates and the late update tonight. Thank you for your patience and support as we have transitioned classes and scholars have moved to Great Hearts Online.

We are so proud of how our scholars continue to show perseverance and grit through these times. Last week, we were busy with benchmark testing and are continuing to settle into new classes and schedules in Quarter 3. Some quick announcements below.

Friendship Day

Next Friday, scholars will celebrate the virtue of friendship together. You are welcome to work on a craft for your scholar to bring and share with classmates or individually wrapped snacks for the class to enjoy. Please feel free to reach out to room parents or your homeroom teacher to help organize your plans for this. Infographic below.

ELA:

We are well underway on our adventures with Princess Irene in Princess and the Goblin by George MacDonald. Scholars have had practice making predictions, learning new words, and identifying figurative language as they read. We have had rich conversations about courage, friendship, and curiosity. As we become better readers, the scholars have also been improving their writing and grammar. We are practicing RPQ-ing, repeating part of the question in our answer. Scholars have also continued to analyze sentences, with a focus on interrogative sentences and contractions. Please remind your scholar to practice Paul Revere’s Ride each night! It’s the perfect tool to ensure a thorough 20 second hand wash. :) We look forward to becoming better Language Artists!

Math:

Scholars worked hard this week reviewing what we have learned about quadrilaterals and triangles (ask your scholar to explain what an isosceles triangle is!). We also celebrated our acquired math knowledge with a cumulative unit assessment at the end of this week. Please continue to encourage your scholar to practice math facts at home through flash cards, skip counting, or other games. Although simple, committing times tables to memory greatly enables math fluency in problem solving and will help your scholar develop into a confident mathematician!

History:

What a week! We have wrapped up our discussion on African history, and I know I will miss all of the conversations we have had about trade, money, Islam, and leadership. We took our test and scholars should expect their grade next week. Next week, we will also begin our unit on American history, with a discussion on Indigenous groups and Texas geography. I know our scholars are excited to learn more about their history.

Science:

It has been such an amazing week of learning about sound waves. We started the week with a general lesson on waves and we ended the week with students composing their own sound waves! Next week, we will do a quick review of sound waves, before moving onto light waves.

Have a great weekend! Please reach out to your teachers with any questions, and we'll get back to you as soon as we can. 👋
