Math:

When we return from break, we will be continuing our unit in Geometry. We encourage your scholar to continue reviewing the content about angles that we have learned thus far so that they are able to retain what they have learned! In January, we will be discussing perpendicular and parallel lines.

ELA:

This week in ELA our scholars continue to practice their recitation of “Paul Revere’s Ride”--thank you, Fourth Graders, for showing perseverance in this feat! Our scholars have also finished their section in Well-Ordered Language about Direct Objects and will begin learning about Subject Pronouns when they return from break! They will also continue to follow Nat’s journey in Carry On, Mr. Bowditch. Have a great winter break, Fourth Grade! You’ve earned it!

History:

This week we wrapped up our discussions on Islam, with a lesson on Islamic Culture and one lesson on The Crusades. When we come back from our break, we will be reviewing for a quiz on Islam so we can move onto our chapter on African kingdoms! Have a fantastic break, historians! I can’t wait to see you and hear all the great things you did over the break.

Science:

Scholars learned about food webs and the significance of Helen Keller and Louis Braille this week! We then began our new unit learning about how energy causes changes all around us like with lights or water changing states of matter. We hope you and your scholars have a wonderful break, and we will resume our investigations on energy when they return.

ELA:

Our scholars continue to read Carry On, Mr. Bowditch -- they are invested in Nat and his success as an academic! They also understand the central emotions in the narrative as we follow Nat’s struggles. Additionally, our scholars continue to craft their own writing skills during grammar. This week, our scholars will get to show what they know about direct objects in a quiz. You’re doing great, 4th Grade!

Math:

This coming week in math we will be diving deeply into geometry! Students will discuss angles and degrees. We are focusing on the terms acute, obtuse, and right angles. Scholars will also begin using protractors. For distance learners, we encourage you to acquire a protractor for your scholar, or print out a paper one!

History:

This past week we began our discussion on Islam and learning about the foundations of this religion, as well as how Islam spread. This coming week in history we will continue our discussion on Islam! We will be learning about the different advancements made by Muslim scholars, and then we will conclude with a discussion on The Crusades. DL should expect one video lesson and one reading lesson.

Science:

Scholars did great persevering with their unit test in science this week. Next week, we will spend one more lesson in biology discussing food webs, Helen Keller, and Louis Braille. The remainder of the week we will begin an exploration to energy by connecting that the changes that occur around us are evidence of different forms of energy and energy transfer!

_____________________________

ELA:

Our scholars began to read Carry On, Mr. Bowditch by Jean Lee Latham. They are already excited to see how its protagonist, Nat, will use mathematics to pursue his dreams! Our 4th Graders have also started the memorization of "Paul Revere's Ride" by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow--this one will be a feat to memorize, but our scholars show the perseverance they will need to achieve their goals! Great work, Fourth Grade!

Math:

This coming week in math, scholars will be reviewing all that we have learned thus far in the year to take their cumulative Units 1-3 test. We strongly recommend that students attend office hours to review. Then, we will begin our unit in Geometry! We look forward to learning more about lines, angles, and shapes.

History:

Greetings Spartan family! We have concluded our unit on Medieval Europe and scholars took a test to finish up the unit. We are so proud of their perseverance while finishing up this big unit! We are going to be moving onto a small unit on Ancient and Medieval African Kingdoms and Islam. Just like when we started learning about Christianity, remember that we are studying religion to learn/observe/appreciate, not to try and convert or shop around for religions. If you have any questions, feel free to email Ms. Cunningham (gwen.cunningham@greatheartswesternhills.org)

Science:

Scholars are finishing up our unit on structures and functions of living things! We enjoyed learning about different senses that animals are able to use, such as river dolphins using echolocation, or even plants that can smell pheromones from other plants. Next week, we will review and take a test to wrap up what we have been learning about living organisms. Encourage your scholar to reference their student reader and to use the study guide that will come on Monday to help prepare.
